Small (and shrinking) Form Factor

Small (and shrinking) Form Factor

. . . Why Small Form Factor Matters

  • Tiny laser; electronics also small
  • Currently only 5" x 7.7" x 2.5" (12.7 cm x 19.6 cm x 6.3 cm)
  • Size will decrease rapidly; will be the size of a smart phone in a few years
  • OCT sytems can shrink substantially over time
  • Small form factor can enable portable systems
  • Small size can reduce system cost

Small Size

The Insight laser's packaging is smaller than a cigar box.  The laser is offered in three different package configurations: an OEM version; a bench-top version (for experimentation and validation); and an instrumentation version (with touch-panel control of all key laser functions).

Over time, the from factor will become much smaller.  In a few years, it will be the size of a smartphone.

The Evolution to an Even Smaller Size

The first incarnation of the Insight laser comprised 23 cubic feet of instrumentation and took two lab benches to set up.  Eighteen months ago, an intermediate rendition shrank the size to about one meter.  Reductions in drive electronics and other changes will drive the laser through two major size reductions and lead to a laser about the size of a current smartphone.
